All artists have a very special relationship with their tools. Elements such as care and trust are vital. The artist must care for the maintenance of the brush. This not only so that the brush lasts, but so that it also performs well. As a result, an artist that properly maintains their brushes, will achieve the desired end results more often and will actually save quite a bit of cash. The main reason, however, should be out of respect to the craft.
Here is a quick guide to properly maintain your oil brushes!
STEP 1: REMOVE EXCESS PAINT
It is very important to remove any excess paint following an upwards motion. This is so that you don’t damage the shape of the brush. It is best to do this with a soft towel/ cloth. Do it gently while applying a bit of pressure to the bristles from both sides
STEP 2: CLEAN WITH MINERAL SPIRITS
For this step we recommend that you use at least two jars. Once you clean your brush with the mineral spirits let the paint residue sink to the bottom of the jar. Once the paint completely rests at the bottom, you will be able to pour the clean solution onto a new jar! This lets you recycle your solution and be lest wasteful. The best medium for cleaning is actually linseed oil but this could prove to be more expensive.
STEP 3: CLEAN WITH A BRUSH CLEANER
A brush cleaner can be a game changing investment for you! You can gently clean your brushes with a mineral spirit solution or linseed oil & let your brushes rest vertically vertically afterwards. The textured bottom of the pot makes sure that the bristles of your brushes are properly taken care off. This is a must have for any painter! All mediums apply.
STEP 4: SOAP, RINSE & DRY
The last step consist of gently washing your brushes with a small amount of soap. Rinse them gently and let them dry A brush holder is a great tool that lets you keep your brushes organized, clean and healthy!
